This Domain
This domain was first registered on the 17th September 2001. At that time it was bought to host my fansite devoted to the cult TV show “The Professionals” after the one created/hosted on a free web hosting site was continually being knocked off-line for exceeding bandwidth.
For several happy years I ran my fansite on this domain until ill health took it’s toll on me. After more than 2 years lying stagnant I was on the verge of letting the domain expire when I decided I really didn’t want to let it go. As my very first domain and home to one of my favourite sites ever I was reluctant to just turn my back on it.
Kind of strange being sentimental over a website/domain but it was to me. I was proud of what I had accomplished here so I feel no shame over not wanting to just abandon it.
I did however hit a dead end when trying to decide what exactly to do with this domain, it is stupid to waste money on something that I wasn’t using at all so I placed sentimentality aside and had a good, long think about what I wanted to do.
At around the same time I had long since been tempted to create my own little book blog to share my own thoughts on the books I devoured on a regular basis. I had been looking at using one of those free blog sites to do so and it was when I was on the Word Press site trying to make the decision whether to go with them or blogger/blogspot when I literally had a ‘duh’ moment.
There on the page was the alternative to using a free online blog with them and instead get a paid site through them with more option to customize or you could upload WP direct to an existing domain and host it yourself.
It was then it seemed that the answer to both my dilemmas was sitting right in front of me in black and white on my computer monitor.
So, I uploaded the software to my domain and within 10 minutes I was up and running.
During those first few weeks I changed themes more than once and created several of my own banners to give my site a more individual and personal feel. Then came the time to start adding some real content and then I hit a road block, what exactly was the best way to present my reviews and other content.
If there was something I hated is doing anything half-assed. If I was going to create a book blog I wanted to do it properly. The first step was creating a layout (theme) that I liked. Next was what content to add and third was how best to present my content.
Three easy, or at least clear, concise steps to follow.
As I am still learning as I go along I am greatly enjoying this new way to share my love of reading with other book addicts. That said, I still have a long way to go, but I am looking forward to this new journey.
